Abstract
On the bases of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques it is possible to show that low density polyethylene (LDPE) annealed at 40°C divides its original crystal population into two: the first one melts at the annealing temperature, recrystallize and continuously thicken to improve its stability. The fraction that does not melt at 40°C is unable to increase its lamellar thickness, although it shows crystal lateral growth. Finally, an interesting phenomenon was detected through the SAXS analysis: a transition of polymer segments from the interphase towards to the amorphous phase. This process occurs inside the stacks of the original crystals which remain unmelted at 40°C.
