Abstract
Acid-, sodium-, and calcium-types of carboxyethyl carbamoylethyl cellulose (CECEC) sample with various degrees of substitution by carboxyethyl group « F »CO or carbamoyl ethyl group « F»NH, and thus with various total degrees of substitution « F»t (« F» CO+« F» NH) were synthesized by reacting alkali cellulose with acrylonitrile as a potential clotting materials in a solid form and coagulant in its solution. Increase of « F»NH for the CECEC sample by reaction with acrylamide was also attempted in aqueous alkali solution. « F» CO, « F»NH, and « F» t were determined by elemental analysis. Full assignment of the peaks in 13C NMR spectra was given. Methods for estimating « F»CO, « F»NH, and « F»t by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy were proposed. From the latter, the total degrees of substitution at C2+C3 and C6 positions, « f2» « f3» and « f6» were determined. CECEC was discovered to have excellent topical clotting ability towards human blood and coagulating ability towards human blood plasma, as compared with carboxymethyl cellulose and gelatine. The mechainsm of the clotting was discussed in connection with « F»CO and « F»NH.
