Abstract
The history of fluoroelastomer development is briefly traced and the technology of many of today’s fluoroelastomer products is discussed. An important theme in current research is the synthesis of fluoroelastomers with improved low temperature properties. The preparation of perfluorinated elastomers from perfluorovinyl ethers with glass transition temperatures as low as −76°C is discussed. Plasticization of these materials with perfluorinated polyether oils is also described.
