Abstract
In the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate at 20°C where transfer predominates, termination rates were estimated over a wide range of conversion and discussed on the basis of the entanglement and reptation theories. The critical chain length can be expressed by nc∝c−2 (c, volume fraction of polymer), where the rate of termination between radicals with chain length shorter than nc is independent of chain length. This equation was confirmed using data already reported. The final conversion is discussed experimentally and theoretically.
