Abstract
The crystal and molecular structure of poly(1,3-dioxepane) [–OCH2O–(CH2)4–]n has been determined by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic methods. The cell constants are a=8.50 Å, b=4.79 Å, and c(fiber axis)=13.50 Å, and the space group is P2cn(C2v9). Two molecular chains pass through a unit cell. A molecular chain contains two monomeric units in the fiber identity period, and has a structure of the glide type which deviates slightly from the conformation,
where T, G, and denote the trans and two types of gauche forms, respectively. The COCOC sequences take the gauche–gauche forms in a way similar to poly(oxymethylene). From the present result, it was confirmed that bond scission of the 1,3-dioxepane ring occurs exclusively at the same type of bond, giving rise to the regular head-to-tail polymer in cationic polymerization.
