Abstract
An attempt was made to polymerize sulfur-containing aldehydes such as β-methylthiopropaldehyde(MTPA), β-ethylthiopropaldehyde(ETPA), β-methylthiobutyraldehyde(MTBA), β-ethylthiobutyraldehyde(ETBA), and β-phenylthiobutyraldehyde (PTBA) using various cationic catalysts.Poly(phosphoric acid), poly(phosphoric acid) aniline salt, and BF3OEt2 gave only a cyclic trimer in the different polymerization conditions. On the other hand, these aldehydes were polymerized by SnCl4 and by AlBr3 to the linear polyacetal and the cyclic trimer. The ratio of the polymer and the cyclic trimer produced was influenced by monomer structure, catalyst, solvent, and polymerization temperature. PolyETPA and PolyETBA were soluble in ethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, and halogenized hydrocarbon, while poly-MTPA and poly PTBA were partly insoluble in usual organic solvents.
