Sulphur Isotope Ratios in the McArthur Lead-Zinc-Silver Deposit

Abstract

THE massive, stratiform McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit, situated in the Northern Territory of Australia, is approximately 1,600×106 yr old. This deposit is remarkable in that unlike the similarly aged stratiform Mount Isa and Broken Hill lead-zinc-silver orebodies1,2, the degree of metamorphism is slight. Consequently, primitive mineral textures have been preserved which provide a valuable insight into sedimentary ore forming processes. With these aspects in mind, an isotopic study of these deposits has been commenced, and already the preliminary 34S/32S ratios determined for the McArthur deposit permit tentative conclusions to be made concerning its origin.
