Johachidolite, CaAl[B3O7], a Borate with Very Dense Atomic Structure

Abstract

JOHACHIDOLITE is a curious mineral species first described by Iwase and Saito1 from nepheline dikes cutting limestone at Johachido, North Korea. They proposed the unlikely formula H6Na2Ca3Al4F5B6O20 which prompted speculations in several subsequent papers, none of which reconciled its chemistry. Drs R. C. Erd and L. Aristarain have determined the cell parameters as being a, 7.970 ± 0.001; b, 11.722 ± 0.001; c, 4.374 ± 0.001 Å, Cmma, Z=4, and they aroused our interest in the crystallographic structure.
