Observations of Cygnus X-3 by Uhuru

Abstract

ON September 2 we were informed by R. M. Hjellming that some time during the previous few days the radio source within the positional uncertainty of Cyg X-3 had brightened in intensity by an unprecedented 3 orders of magnitude. Fortunately, the X-ray satellite, Uhuru, had been scanning the galactic plane (the source region is at b111°) since August 19. We maintained that orientation until September 9 when we reoriented the satellite to view the pulsing X-ray source, Hercules X-1.
