Rares Earth in Palaeozoic Geosynclinal Basalts in Japan

Abstract

THE Chichibu system of Japan contains Palaeozoic basaltic rocks which are intercalated in sedimentary rocks of eugeo-synclinal facies, forming mostly lavas, sill and pyroclastics, together with pillow lava. Some of the geosynclinal basalts were recently reported to be similar to ocean ridge basalts or abyssal basalts in their major compositions1–4, and also in their potassium and rubidium contents5. In this article, we discuss the relative abundance patterns to chondrite of the rare earth elements (REE) in the geosynclinal basalts, and correlate the patterns with other chemical characteristics of the rocks.
