Abstract
A Nigerian alkaline basalt containing large phenocrysts of plagioclase feldspars1,2 and comprising one of the numerous Tertiary-Quaternary plugs of the Benue Trough province is a fine grained, subaerial rock which seems to be suitable for whole rock K-Ar dating. The age obtained, however, 95 m.y. (Table 1), is geologically unrealistic, for absence of sediment cover, the freshness of the rock and the ages of associated rocks all point to a late Tertiary origin2.
