Brassington Formation: a Newly Recognized Tertiary Formation in the Southern Pennines

Abstract

THE term “pocket deposits” has been somewhat loosely applied to the bodies of sand, clay and gravel which are preserved in solution cavities in the Carboniferous limestone of Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Though the term has been widely used1–7 and has been in general use since the 1890s, it has never been properly defined and may have a different meaning for different persons. We consider that the term is not amenable to proper definition within any stratigraphic code, and that it should be discarded.
