Restaging TUR reduces recurrence and progression risk

Transurethral resection (TUR) is widely used to manage early-stage bladder cancer. A recent study has confirmed that a second, or restaging, TUR is associated with a lower risk of progression and cancer-related death. Restaging TUR is therefore recommended as a standard of care in patients with stage T1 bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer presents as nonmuscle-invasive papillary tumors in 70% of cases; one-third of these invade the lamina propria of the bladder and are classified as stage T1. One of the most widely used and conservative ways of managing early-stage bladder cancer is by transurethral resection (TUR) of the bladder. Close surveillance following TUR is important, as both Ta and T1 tumors commonly recur—between 30% and 50% of T1 bladder tumors subsequently progress to muscle invasion or metastasis, and are therefore potentially more lethal.
