Wearable robot aids walking after stroke

A soft, wearable robotic garment — or 'exosuit'— aids normal walking in people with hemiparetic gait after stroke, according to new research. The device could also facilitate rehabilitation in these individuals.

Slow and inefficient gait resulting from hemiparesis is a common symptom in people who have had a stroke, and can have a major effect on disability, independence and quality of life in these individuals. Assistive devices, such as canes and supports, are often prescribed to facilitate walking; however, these tools can themselves disrupt natural walking patterns and delay recovery.
