Sleep: not such a waste

The authors used two-photon imaging to follow the path of fluorescent tracers that were infused into the CSF through a cannula in the cisterna magna (a cistern that receives CSF from the fourth ventricle) and monitored the flow of the tracers in awake, sleeping and anaesthetized mice. In all experiments, the brain state of the mice was confirmed using electrocorticography and electromyography. In sleeping mice and anaesthetized mice, the tracers flowed along periarterial and periparenchymal spaces into the parenchyma, but this tracer influx was reduced by more than 90% in awake mice.
