Variety is the spice of eukaryotic life

The genomic diversity of eukaryotic microorganisms has not yet been fully investigated but, as reviewed in this month's column, this is beginning to change.

Over the past 12 months, genome sequencing projects have been completed for two ciliates1,2, as well as for a second amitochondriate protist, two years after the first protist genome sequence (that of Entamoeba histolytica 3) was reviewed in this column4.
