Recent molecular and mechanistic insights into host–virus dynamics have led to the development of functional biomarkers, such as lipid-based biomarkers, that can be used to analyse the level of active infection in natural phytoplankton communities and quantitatively assess the effects of viral infection on the ecosystem and biogeochemical cycles, including the movement of carbon.
