During early development of the D. melanogaster embryo, the anterior–posterior body axis is set up by the graded degradation of maternal mRNAs encoding morphogens. Nanos (NOS) is one such morphogen and is expressed in a gradient that is emitted from the posterior pole of the embryo. The normal distribution of this NOS gradient is essential for embryo patterning.
