For many non-infectious complex diseases, it is difficult to predict who will develop a particular disease. Strategies to understand disease begin with the patient and include genetic analyses, epidemiology, statistics and studies in animal models. Induced pluripotent stem (iPS)-cell technology expands the opportunities for research. Patient-derived iPS cells can be used to examine the disease process at a cellular level. iPS cells can be used to test responses to possible drugs and might be used to develop patient-specific cell therapy.
