These authors have ... defined a role for p63 as a crucial regulator of epithelial cell adhesion.

The human breast epithelial cell line MCF-10A was used as a model system to study the roles of p63 in epithelial biology. There are several distinct isoforms of p63, so the authors first investigated their relative importance in MCF-10A cells by specifically disrupting them using short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs). The specific loss of the ΔNp63α isoform resulted in cell rounding, detachment and apoptosis, an effect that could be blocked by the expression of an shRNA-insensitive mutant of ΔNp63α. This finding indicates that ΔNp63α is essential for MCF-10A cell survival.
