This month's winning image was submitted by Riccardo Cassiani Ingoni (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health, USA (cassianr@ninds.nih.gov)). It shows a human neurosphere attaching to a coated surface.
Cells were fixed and stained using cell-specific primary antibodies against a marker of immature neurons (red) and a marker of astrocytic cells (green). Nuclei were stained with the DNA dye 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindol (blue). The image was obtained using an inverted fluorescence microscope (Axiovert200M, Zeiss). Bar, 100 µm.
The winner would like to acknowledge the help of Roland Martin (martinr@ninds.nih.gov) and Paolo Muraro (murarop@ninds.nih.gov) (both at the NINDS, USA).
