Pancreatic tumours are principally composed of noncancer support cells, particularly PSCs. These cells can impair vascular function, contributing to the hypoxic, nutrient-limited microenvironment of PDAC. “Given the abundance of PSCs and nutrient limitations imposed on the cancer cells, we reasoned that PSCs may have been playing some sort of metabolic support role for the cancer cells,” explains author Costas Lyssiotis. Previously, the investigators had shown that dysregulated metabolic processes in pancreatic cancer cells support growth in the harsh tumour environment, but the source of nutrients was unresolved.
