Phoneme–genome data set evolves

Phonemes are the smallest units of sound that distinguish meaning between words. The authors analysed phoneme inventories (the collection of phonemes used within a language) from 2,082 languages using a database compiled by study co-author and Stanford linguist Merritt Ruhlen, as well as 968 languages from another linguistic database, PHOIBLE. They then combined these data with a genetic variation data set that included 246 populations and produced a phenome–genome data set by matching the genotyped populations to the phoneme inventories of their native languages.
