Two more big pharma companies have bought into one of the hottest areas in cancer therapy: adoptive transfer of T cells that have been genetically engineered to recognize and kill cancer cells. In June, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced a deal potentially worth more than US$350 million with Adaptimmune to develop genetically tailored T cells with enhanced T cell receptors (TCRs). Soon after, Pfizer announced a collaboration with Cellectis to develop allogeneic T cells with chimeric antigen receptors (CARs), making an upfront payment of $80 million and offering milestones that could total more than $2.5 billion.
