When reading the response to my recent Opinion article (Integrative oncology: really the best of both worlds? Nature Rev. Cancer 14, 692–700 (2014))1 by the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO; Integrative oncology — strong science is needed for better patient care. Nature Rev. Cancer http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nrc3822-c1 (2015))2, it became apparent to me that although we agree that “strong science” is needed for better patient care, we disagree strongly about what constitutes strong science with respect to integrative oncology. I was, however, gratified to see that the SIO conceded that homeopathy and reiki are integrative modalities with the “weakest mechanistic evidence base”. Unfortunately, the SIO seems to have missed my point, as evidenced by the accusation that I “selectively” focused on these two modalities. As I described in the article1 and elsewhere3, there was a clear reason for focusing on these treatments, which was to illustrate how integrative oncology frequently discounts infinitesimally low prior plausibility and how that oversight leads to the integration of pseudoscience into oncology.

    This reply to an item of correspondence originally stated that M.D. Anderson Cancer Center offers reiki to patients. However, following publication it was brought to our attention that M.D. Anderson Cancer Center no longer offers reiki, and so we have corrected the sentence online to remove any reference to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
