TAp63 tips the energy balance?

Elsa Flores and colleagues used their previously generated mouse knockout of TAp63. They noticed that these mice developed numerous metabolic defects into adulthood. Compared with wild-type mice, TAp63−/− mice became substantially obese and had lipid deposits in various tissues, even when food intake was comparable. As a potential mechanistic explanation, the expression levels of metabolic enzymes in the livers of TAp63−/− mice indicated an increase in fatty acid synthesis, but a decrease in fatty acid consumption through oxidation. Furthermore, mitochondria in TAp63−/− mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) had a slower rate of oxidative phosphorylation.
