Although gain and/or loss of multiple chromosomes are common in advanced cancers, early-stage malignancies tend to have more limited chromosome gains. In order to systematically test the tumorigenic properties of aneuploid cells mimicking those found in early cancers, Sheltzer et al. created mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) that are trisomic for chromosome 1, 13, 16 or 19 and compared them with sibling-matched euploid MEFs. Although these chromosomes encode various oncogenes, their trisomic presence was detrimental to the proliferation of MEFs in vitro.
