Human glioblastomas (GBMs) are thought to harbour a subpopulation of glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) that govern tumour initiation, maintenance and recurrence after therapy. Although homogeneous GSC populations can produce progenitors with diverse clonal growth dynamics, the origin of such proliferative heterogeneity is unclear. Lan et al. now propose a model whereby proliferative heterogeneity is derived from stochastic fate decisions made by a homogeneous population of GCSs and their progeny.
