Abstract
Grapevines (Vitis spp.) offer the potential for contributing to the North American prairie biomass based economy. While these regions are too cold for the traditional V. vinifera wine grape species, they are well-suited for more cold hardy varietals. The grapevines provide opportunities for high-value phytochemicals and platform chemicals (primarily stilbene based) as well as bioenergy production from resulting lignocellulosic residues. In a biorefinery concept, the 'front-end' high-value phytochemicals could help subsidize the lower-value bioenergy production.
