Single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides have already made their mark in the world of device physics. Twin studies have now found that they exhibit unconventional Ising pair superconductivity.

The isolation of graphene more than ten years ago transformed the landscape of condensed-matter physics1. And the realization that this single-atom-thick material was not one of a kind was cause for even more excitement. Since then, physicists and engineers have explored a vast family of two-dimensional crystals, in which electrons exist in layers with insulating, conducting or semiconducting properties2. But surprisingly little attention has been directed towards the investigation of superconductivity in these 2D crystals3,4,5,6. Writing in Nature Physics, two groups have independently uncovered an unusual manifestation of superconductivity, the so-called Ising pairing, in single- and few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides.
