Since the drive for thin-film-transistor LCDs began in the 1980s, these devices have become kings of the display world. But hot on their tails is a whole host of alternative technologies.

From digital clocks to big-screen televisions, displays — devices that convert electronic data into visual information — provide a crucial interface function. Electronic displays trace their inception to the use of the cathode-ray tube (CRT) in televisions in the 1940s. Flat-panel displays (FPDs) have been in development since the 1950s, with early versions of plasma-display panels (PDPs) and LCDs emerging in the 1960s. With the construction of manufacturing facilities ('fabs') to produce active-matrix LCDs using thin-film transistors (TFT LCDs) in the late 1980s, the stage was set for rapid industry growth. The display industry is set to pass the $100 billion mark in revenues this year.
