The optics field is booming, as reflected by the impressive turn out at Photonics West this year. The conference brought researchers and industry figures together to forge the latest light paths, and microelectromechanical systems technology featured strongly.

With over 17,000 delegates, 3,000 technical talks and an exhibition showcasing the products of more than 1,000 companies, there was plenty to occupy the attendees. As people hurried from one end of the convention centre to the other to catch back-to-back technical sessions, and wandered through cavernous exhibition halls, it was clear just how vibrant and active the field is, a comment that has been reiterated by the SPIE itself following the success of the conference. Topics ranged from photonics in plastic surgery to lasers probing gravitational waves to optofluidic 'plumbing on chip' to imaging of the brain.
