The use of whispering-gallery-mode optical resonators has enabled the creation of a microwave receiver that is immune to electromagnetic attack.

For nearly two decades scientists and engineers have been designing systems based on a blend of photonics and microwave technology, an area of research that has become known as microwave photonics1. Central to the approach is the idea of using photonics to generate, transmit and process microwave signals with a performance or capability that would not otherwise be possible.
