The potential risks surrounding nanotechnology can often appear complex and confusing. But with some basic guideposts, argues Andrew D. Maynard, navigating them can become a little easier.

There are numerous studies and speculations on what might — or might not — be risky about nanoscale science and engineering. But surprisingly, there are relatively few guideposts to help researchers plot a sensible course through this risk landscape, as they set out to develop successful, safe, and responsible products. Here, I provide a few guideposts of my own, in the hope that they will provide a modicum of direction through a setting that's fraught with pitfalls.
