Emerging technologies need to be developed responsibly if their benefits are to outweigh any potential risks. Yet do entrepreneurs really have the luxury of grappling with future consequences from the get-go, asks Andrew D. Maynard.

In June 2004, experts from 25 countries convened in Alexandria, Virginia to discuss responsible research and development of nanotechnology1. The conversations were wide ranging, and at times heated. Yet underpinning them was a shared concern that, without proactively taking into account the potential environmental, health and social impacts of nanotechnology, its promise could be jeopardized.
