Small symmetry breaking in the configuration of an ensemble of nanospheres creates huge Fano resonance enhancements in the visible range.

The relative position of atoms uniquely defines the properties of a molecule; analogously, the relative position of metallic nanostructures in a small cluster uniquely defines the optical properties of the ensemble. These clusters, sometimes called metamolecules or plasmonic oligomers, exhibit particularly interesting properties that derive from their geometry and the material the individual components are made of1,2,3,4,5,6. As metallic nanoparticles are brought into close proximity with each other, their individual plasmons — cloud of conductive electrons at the surface of the nanoparticle that is excited by a suitable irradiation — start to interact with each other and form hybridized collective modes in the gap, similar to a molecular orbital in the molecular analogy.
