Two studies suggest how mutations in the APC tumor suppressor gene can contribute to chromosomal aberrations in precancerous cells.

Many types of tumors, including those that arise in the intestinal tract, show substantial imbalances in allele copy number1,2. A subset of these alterations is thought to have tumor-promoting consequences. But how does such allelic imbalance arise, and how can a single cell acquire such a vast repertoire of abnormalities?
