Edwards hopes to change that. In his role as director and chief executive of the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), a PPP that since its inception in 2004 has released three-dimensional structures of more than 1,500 medically relevant proteins and developed 20 selective inhibitors of protein function, all publically available with no strings attached, Edwards is teaming up with the CHDI Foundation to pursue drug leads for Huntington's disease. Importantly, Edwards notes, “we have an up-front, sign-on-the-dotted-line agreement that we will never, ever file patents, no matter what we find.”
