Mesenchymal stem cells: another anti-inflammatory treatment for sepsis?

I read with great interest the paper by Nemeth et al.1 and the related News and Views article by Tyndall and Pistoia2 in the January issue. In this elegant study, the authors showed that injection of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) could rescue mice from death after cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) as a result of the potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of these cells. Although the high scientific quality of the article is unquestionable, I would like to comment on its clinical relevance.
