In the US, approximately 14–15 million units of blood are collected annually and transfused to about 5 million people1. About 1,000 of these recipients will develop transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI). A few hours after blood infusion, people who experience this complication suffer from respiratory symptoms with hypoxia, associated with inflammation in the lung or exacerbation of a preexisting pulmonary condition.
