Potential stem cell–based transplantation therapy for the brain is being proposed for a variety of disease conditions. Functional replacement of degenerated neurons such as in Parkinson's disease, delivery of gene products for inherited metabolic diseases such as Batten's disease, trophic support for acute or chronic brain damage, and exogenous oligodendrocyte substitution in a variety of disease conditions are being actively pursued as disease targets for cell transplantation therapy.
