Characterization of genetically defined primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) in humans is crucial for providing better care of patients with PID and a better understanding of the biology of the immune system. At the most recent meeting of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) in Budapest, progress in understanding the molecular basis of nine newly identified PIDs and disease-causing genes was presented (Table 1) and an unprecedented number of PIDs was reported1,2,3,4,5,6,7. The defects described involve both innate and adaptive immunity.
