Pleiotropic Effects of a Rifampicin-resistant Mutation in E. colt

Abstract

WE have shown previously that a group of episomal genes (controlling fertility, MS2 adsorption and T7 restriction) are not expressed when Escherichia coil are grown in the presence of low concentrations of rifampicin, concentrations at which both cell growth and episome replication continue1. The expression of the episomal characters is rapidly restored when rifampicin is removed, and the loss of function is not due to curing1.
