Reaction of Human Smooth Muscle Antibody with Thymus Medullary Cells

Abstract

SMOOTH muscle antibodies (SMA) are present in the sera of most cases of active chronic hepatitis (ACH)1, 2. They occur also in cases of acute hepatitis3, infectious mononucleosis4, 5 and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection (G. B., unpublished). These antibodies are usually demonstrated by immunofluorescence using frozen sections of rat stomach or rat kidney. It has been shown that SMA react also with an actomyosin-like component present in the membranes of liver and other cells6. There is evidence that this antigen is different from the striated muscle myosin7.
