Abstract
IT is well known that an increased incidence of Down's syndrome and of some other chromosome anomalies is associated with advancing maternal age. Several assumptions have been tested in an effort to determine the essential factor predisposing to non-disjunction with increasing age of the mother. Henderson and Edwards1 reported that a decrease in the frequency of chiasmata and an increase in the frequency of univalents are associated with an increase of maternal age. Deficiency of chiasmata seems to be responsible for Down's syndrome.
