Abstract
Aleutian disease (AD) of mink is an immunological disease, and the immune response against the viral antigen initiates the pathological changes1–3. This “slow virus”, however, replicates as rapidly as do many viruses which cause acute disease4,5. The disease is characterized by the development of hypergammaglobulinaemia, systemic proliferation of plasma cells, glomerulonephritis, and hepatitis, and is invariably fatal6–10. Extremely high titres of antibody have been detected from serum of hypergammaglobulinaemic mink3,5,11–13. The role of the host immune response in causing the disease condition has been shown by the prevention of lesions by immunosuppression1 and by the enhancement of lesions following the administration of a killed virus vaccine or passive antibody2.
