Effect of Denervation on the Differentiation of Twitch Muscles in the Kitten Hind Limb

Abstract

IN the adult cat the twitch muscles of the hind limb can be classified into two groups according to the speed of the isometric twitch—the duration of twitches of fast-twitch muscle being less than one-third of that of slow-twitch muscle. At birth these differences are much smaller1 but they develop progressively over the first two months of neonatal life2. It has been shown that this progressive change is influenced by the motor nerves supplying the muscles2,3; it was therefore of interest to examine the effect of removing the nervous influence completely by denervation.
