Abstract
It has been known for some time that in normal cells growing in culture a relationship exists between cell density and mitotic index1. At a certain saturation density contact inhibition of growth occurs2–4; DNA synthesis decreases and cell division ceases or is drastically reduced. However, growth can be stimulated again by a number of agents2,5–8. There are indications that at least some of these factors, such as proteases, act primarily at the cell surface (where they produce structural changes), for proteases immobilized on glass beads are as effective as proteases in solution7.
