A reference to the PhD thesis of M. Ebner could not be cited at the time of publication of the Article due to an embargo. This has now been included and the last relevant sentence of the Article has been updated to ‘In contrast to earlier preliminary work in which magnetic orientation control of graphite was shown as a possible way to improve battery performance36, we have successfully demonstrated that graphite flakes can be magnetically aligned in model anodes to increase the lithium storage capacity of the electrode by a factor of between 1.6 and 3 at practical charging rates as compared to a conventional reference configuration.’
