Daily nocturnal hemodialysis—a paradigm shift worthy of disrupting current dialysis practice

Various strategies have been considered in attempts to improve the outcomes of patients on dialysis, including increasing dialysis dose, using alternative depuration methods, changing dialysis schedules and focusing on preventing or treating specific comorbidities and complications. This paper will discuss the first three strategies.

Two well-designed, randomized controlled trials (RCTs; the HEMO [Hemodialysis] study and ADEMEX [ADEquacy of peritoneal dialysis in MEXico]) did not support the hypothesis that increased dialysis dose decreases mortality in patients on thrice-weekly hemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.1,2
